MANTENNA AND THE MENACE OF THE EVIL HORDE! (mini-comic, 1984)

Mantenna and the Menace of the Evil Horde! is a 1984 Masters of the Universe mini-comic. No author or artist is credited. The art here is by the same person who did Leech – The Master of Power Suction Unleashed!, and it very well could be the same writer.

Good gracious, where to even start with the writing? How about with the most unforgivable crime of all – Adam forgetting his sword, which is ludicrous in any scenario, but even more so with Eternia under siege. There’s no excuse at all – not that there’s much excuse for all the unexplained happenings or all the painful alliterative dialogue or for locating the Fright Zone in the middle of the Vine Jungle and not on Etheria. Mantenna is billed as the featured character here (this comic came with his figure), but he’s a bit player here – not that that’s any great disappointment.

The art suffers from many of the same problems Leech does, although it’s slightly better overall. The faces are smashed and flat, Randor’s hair is still pink, and so forth. And in in the big battle between the palace guard and the Evil Horde, several of Skeletor’s warriors have been inexplicably drawn in, and Teela’s randomly flying on the Zoar action figure (indoors). At least Leech stays the same size throughout.

With atrocious writing and only marginally better art, this one’s down there with Leech for worst mini-comic to date.
