The Magic Stealer! is a 1982 Masters of the
Universe mini-comic by Cohn, Texeira, and Smith. Here, Skeletor stumbles
upon an unattended device that will suck all the magic from the planet, because
Eternia is apparently the type of place where people leave doomsday weapons
just lying around.
Aside from the obvious plugs for the Attak-Trak and Zoar
toys, we get to see another of Eternia’s gods and a number of angry “spirits.”
This is interesting in theory; it would be interesting in practice if Cohn did
anything with these creatures beyond shoot them with lasers.
The creative team tries to up the stakes at the end, where
He-Man makes a super-angry face and gives a little inspirational speech (with
extra-heavy inks for emphasis), but it’s too late to make this an engaging
story.
There are some neat ideas here, but they feel slapped
together.
